Definitions of Vegetarianism

There is much confusion out there as to what a vegetarian actually eats, so here is a list of definitions that should clear things up:

  • Vegetarians do not eat meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish, crustacea or the by-products of slaughter.
  • Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat dairy products and eggs
  • Lacto vegetarians eat dairy products, but no eggs
  • Ovo vegetarians eat eggs, but no dairy products
  • Vegans eat no dairy products, eggs or any animal product

You must also beware of imitators! There are people out there who call themselves vegetarians who ain't! Here are a couple of common categories:

  • So-called demi-vegetarians are the worst offenders. These are people who eat little or no meat (usually poultry if they do), but may eat fish. In my view, you have no right to describe yourself as a vegetarian if you consume any flesh of any living creature.
  • Pescatarian is a more recent, and perhaps more honest term, to describe those who eat fish, shellfish and crustacea, but no meat, poultry, game or slaughter by-products. These people can, however, in no way be seen as adequately adhering to the vegetarian ethic.
