Good research provides a solid foundation for all penmanship. Even the most gifted of writers would be nowhere without sound background research. In my work as a social scientist, I have conducted extensive research on the relationship between humans and other animals. My publications in this area are wide-ranging, covering the following topics:
- the practice & history of pet-keeping
- the history & nature of human-animal relations
- implications of (intensive) livestock production practices
- animal disease & public health issues
- animal welfare problems
- moral & societal acceptability of killing domestic animals
- biotechnological issues (e.g. transgenesis & xenotransplantation)
- human-animal interaction in veterinary settings
- veterinary issues
- the history of veterinary medicine
- food culture & eating practices (e.g. vegetarianism, fish consumption)
Please see my curriculum vitae for further details of my books, articles, reviews, interviews and conference papers. I am currently working on a new book about human-animal interactions for a broader, non-academic audience. Naturally, my interests both as a researcher and writer are not restricted to the limited field of anthrozoology. I would be more than happy to be able to spread my wings and tackle other societal issues and cultural phenomena.
During the past few years, I have been engaged as an independent researcher and writer for two separate projects; these were related to public health issues and livestock production, and cultural-historical aspects of fish consumption (see the link to clientele for more information). I am interested in receiving new research commissions for short-term projects or assignments for writing extended articles on a wide range of topics (not necessarily animal related!).
