The vast majority of my clients are sociologists, cultural anthropologists, political scientists, criminologists, ethicists or historians from the major Dutch universities and research institutes, such as the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Free University, Utrecht University, Wageningen University, Radboud University Nijmegen and the W.J.H. However, I also take on commissions from NGOs, such as the Dierenbescherming and Health Action International, political parties and the occasional corporate client.

The nature of commissions generally range from short articles, abstracts, book chapters, lectures, research papers and reports to whole books or doctoral theses. Research & Writing

Aside from sociological research funded and conducted within the realms of university institutions (see my CV for further details), I have been involved in two major freelance projects during the past few years.

  1. Participation in the Rathenau Institute's research programme Afwegingen rond de veehouderij. In this project, I was responsible for conducting qualitative sociological research into the relationship between livestock production and public health. My final report Van zaadje tot karbonaadje: betrokkenen over de volksgezondheidsrisicos van de veehouderij was published digitally in 1991 and is available from www.rathenau.nl in PDF format.

  2. In 1998, together with fellow sociologist Anneke van Otterloo, I was commissioned by the Museum Scheveningen, Den Haag to research and write a cultural historical book on fish preparation and consumption. This quirky volume was published in their historical series under the title: Vis van Zee tot Dis. Toen en nu in het visbedrijf, in het bijzonder in Scheveningen.

I am currently working on a series of articles deriving from a project entitled "Killing Animals", conducted whilst in the employ of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. A second book on human-animal interactions is also in the pipeline.

All new research commissions, particularly relating to animal and environmental issues, will be considered with great interest!
